What sort of Building regulation? I don't know if one even exists for Hotels... Barbados is now debating the relevance of having building codes on the law books..... This debate came about when a family was killed when the house they were living in plunged into an underground sink hole recently.

good luck)
As someone said, do check for reviews at TripAdvisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/
If you are looking for the cheapest out of all, Bufferly Beach Resort.
I like Bougainvillea Beach Resort but it is very expensive as the average price year round is $227: http://www.bougainvillearesort.com/
Butterfly Beach Hotel: http://www.butterflybeach.com/
Dover Beach Hotel: http://www.doverbeach.com/
Blue Horizon Hotel: http://www.barbados.org/hotels/gems/bluehorizon/ (does not have its own website)
Divi Southwinds Beach Resort: http://www.diviresorts.com/DiviSouthwinds/index.html
Coconut Court Beach Hotel: http://www.coconut-court.com/
Please choose carefully i.e. hotel class, price.

Accra Beach Resort, Rockley
The Accra is a very clean, spacious hotel with what appears to be its own beach. With no other hotel along this stretch of crystal blue sea, you sometimes feel you have the island to yourself. With pure white sands, this hotels location is picture postcard. The hotel has numerous reateries, bars and even has a poolside swim up bar where you can order food as well. The ocean view room we had was spacious and clean with a balcony overlooking the beautiful ocean. The staff although a bit on the slow serving side sometimes were in the whole very friendly once you got talking to them. The only drawback for this hotel is that it appears more set up for the business market and not tourists. That said I would revisit this hotel when I revisit the island.
Ahh my home!
To be honest it's much of a muchness. if you pay sterling you will have a better idea of what you are actually paying.
Yes you can use your debit card no probs. when you get your bill you will see the sterling amount.
a tip: sometimes you get more for your money by changing the pound to the US dollar and then when you get to barbados change the US dollar to the Bdos dollar! do check the rates though! i found its worked for me a few times.
hope you love the place as much as i do!
Allamanda Beach Hotel in Hastings (south shore) is reasonably priced and well situated. It is close to the Gap for nightlife and there are plenty of places you can go to eat nearby where you can dine casually. it is also within walking distance of one of the best swimming beaches on the island.
What the hell, The Sands?
That's not what it's called, it's SANDY LANE hotel. President Clinton stayed there, along with Tiger Woods.
There are plenty of nice hotels around the island. Being that it's relatively safe, most of them are nice. Having used to live there, sleeping in a hotel room isn't the same as sleeping in your own home on the island. It is a beautiful and mysterious place...try the Crane or any hotel around St. Michael's or St. James if possible...St. James is where all the rich, stuffy people stay.
To begin let me say that Barbados is a very small island and no place is really that far from another. So it really depends on if you plan to hire a vehicle or not. If you do hire a vehicle well then you should have no problem staying at the Crane if not then....
Crane Beach is a beautiful resort with a lovely beach. It is however in St. Philip which is quite far from Bridgetown where the majority of shopping is. There are restaurants dotted all over the island and Crane Beach boast a couple good ones.
You may however want to consider someplace in St. Michael like the Hilton or maybe ACCRA or someplace on the West Coast.
check out www.Barbados.org
Hotels in St. Michael or Christ church are closer to restaurants, shopping, good beaches and good night life.
St. James is on the West Coast, hotels are a bit more expensive, the beaches are good, also close to shopping, not sure about the night life.
Sometimes a package is cheaper than doing each seperately.
You both need a valid passport, but I'm sure you know that. http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html
It's best to always research before booking to compare the price costs. It would also depend if you're looking for an all-inclusive or not because if it's not, you'd have to limit your spending on food as the food there mainly is expensive. A local travel agency may be necessary since it's your first time going out of the country.
I hope this helps, because sometimes a website can be more than the other and vice versa.
And to correct the first answerer, they do have a lot of hotels. You can check the reviews at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ and see if it suits you.
And to the answerer below me, Barbados is not as flat as you think, it's more rocky on the east coast. I still recommend Barbados.
Not sure what relatively cheap is, a point to note is that the west coast is the most expensive side of the island.
Try The House or Little Good Harbor. Nice and peaceful, and close to beautiful beaches!
OK.I've looked at this one all day..... what are you looking for? What age group? Interests? this would help in the feed back. I live here and am Canadian.
$80 000??? Are you staying at the Sandy Lane hotel?
(Where Tiger Woods got married...)
Simon Cowell (the American Idol judge) also has a home on the island....
The Almond Beach is nice...
The Crane Beach Hotel is also nice..

Or Royal Westmoreland

The Embassy is downtown in the Parish of st. Michael. Since most commercial properties and duty free shopping complexes are down there, the best hotels are in other parishes. Barbados has nice beaches so why not take a hotel in the Carlisle Bay area; that is close enough. Kill two birds with the same stone. Check http://www.barbados.org/

Good Luck and enjoy)
Butterfly Beach Hotel is located in Christ Church, so basically where you will be staying is on the south coast.
It is not like you will be staying in the hotel all the time so you should not be freaked out. People have opinions and they are entitled to their own. When you go and you like it, then great when other people go and some don´t like it.
The truth is, the crime is low but it is possible that you may be approached on the beach i.e. to sell you something or try but I would advise that you ignore and act really busy. I also advise not to bring valuables on the beach but if you are with someone or a group, then make sure they are being watched. You must also be aware that most guys are all about games.
I have been to Barbados 8 times, even temporarily lived there so I know what guys are like besides my friends even guys warn.
Back to Butterfly Beach Hotel, the price is not so bad compared to most hotels. You can access to a big blue bus or yellow mini bus or even a route taxi although it is often crowded for only $1.50 BDS. Best thing is that it is not too far from the airport, by about 15-20 minutes.
You can walk to Oistins, a town known for its fishing. I believe they hold an event every weekend so that is some local nightlife but mainly, nightlife is seen in St. Lawrence Gap so you would have to take a bus/route taxi or whatever you like or even long walk. There is also nightlife in the city, Bridgetown on Bay Street i.e. The Boatyard, Harbour Lights.

Out of the city, there is Club Xtreme but not too far from St. Lawrence Gap. Now, about The Gap, not only it has clubs, it also has hotels, bars/restaurants and so on.

Its the best country in the world!
You may find some of the waitresses a bit rude or stubborn...but its just their 'laid-back' attitude to life!
They eat both rice and potatoes along with a meat dish!
If you are stayiLawrenceSt Lawerence Gap, would should try and get food off a believeh i beleieve is called Roy's Van. It sells traditional Bajan food such as Chicken Foot Soup (btw do not ask for the chicken foot unless you're adventurous!), Flying Fish, Chicken Rice and Peas and many more depending which day it is. It come usually around lunchtime when i was over there last!
Also you must try to go to Oistins. This is along the south coast and is a fish market in the day, but during the evening and night has little bars and food places. You must check out George's Fish Grill who does a meal for about $5Bajan!
You can also try a Roti which is a savoury pastry with a meaty filling of your choice! Try curried chicken at the Roti Hut also neoppositeap, oppostie a Shell Petrol Station!
Along Miami Beach there is a Van that sells amazing Flying Fish Cutters! And also Granny's Kitchen a little supermarket sells meals at cheap prices!
Make sure you venture out of your hotel, although the food in the hotel will be amazing..you must try out the local dishes served by the real Bajan nation! You will have a ball!
I'm going within the next week or so and can't wait!!!
Check Barbados Tourism website. Some hotels change names when they run out of concessions--are bought by other companies etc. if in doubt, check the Barbados Department of Tourism.
Boaz.
